Podere Aia Vecchia Pinot Nero 2018
Fabrizio Niccolaini, together with his wife Partizia Bartolini, also leads the Podere Aia Vecchia, a very small company located in the municipality of Massa Marittima at 700 meters above sea level.
Here there is a small vineyard of 6000m of Pinot Noir grapes on cavernous limestone soils and about 8ha of pastures and mowing meadows, which feed Jersey dairy cows.
The small parcel of Pinot Nero is planted on limestone, it can be a precarious variety due to the tightness of the bunches, propensity to rot and difficult in ripening. After 2017 Fabrizio had limestone vats crafted locally which are left outdoors year round. Here the goal is maximizing the delicacy of Pinot Nero. Damigiana of 60 litres are used in the place of barrels for ageing. To reduce the wine from reducing too far Fabrizio swaps between a regular cork top and a rubber stopper to control the introduction of oxygen. This is now the second vintage of this cuvée and we’re so excited to have gotten our hands on some.
A rarity, only 600 bottles produced. We recommend to drink this wine at it’s apogee. It merits cellaring for additional 2 years
